Laura Esquivel (born September 30, 1950) is a noted Mexican author and an important contributor to Latin-American literature. She is best know for her novel, Como agua para chocolate (Like Water for Chocolate), which had tremendous international success. It was the No. 1 best-selling book in Mexico for three years and has been translated into 23 languages. Like Water for Chocolate was later developed into a film and became one of the largest grossing foreign films ever released in the US. The film also earned Esquivel the Mexican Academy of Motion Pictures award and an Ariel Award. The author has since then published three books, The Law of Love, Between Two Fires, and Malinche.
